Product details

The 15th century is an era of media upheaval. New techniques for reproducing text and images, such as engraving, woodcut, metalcut, and type printing, create new possibilities for distribution and communication. Previously unknown forms of works expand the transmission spectrum of literary culture. The focus of the investigation is on images, whose constitutive component is text and which were also reproduced as woodcuts or metalcuts: as single-sheet prints of various formats, usable in the realm of practiced piety and devotion or for conveying information. These text-images represent a new form of literature: themes familiar from the Middle Ages are often combined and published for the first time with Latin or vernacular small texts. The new images are examined for their specific mediality and checked for their material characteristics, which often point to the literate user. This user sometimes creatively integrates the new media into a well-established medium of transmission: their own handwriting. To make the text-images visible as elements of a literary culture, various contexts must be opened up and explained. The small forms of literary and piety-related transmission must be situated within a cultural landscape. Thus, the histories of images, texts, and books are equally the subject of this investigation.
