Oswald von Wolkenstein (circa 1376-1445) left behind a diverse repertoire of songs as a poet and composer. Political, contemporary, and religious themes intertwine with variations of courtly love discourse. Elke Loenertz has for the first time edited the text and notation of the 40 monophonic and simply texted songs, making them accessible for scholarly examination. The relationship between text and musicalization was a central theme not only in practice but also in medieval music theory, from Guido of Arezzo to Johannis Affligemensis in Heinrich Eger. This work presents the various aspects of the interplay between text and music. Against this backdrop, Oswald's songs prove to be modern and expertly composed.
