Richard Serra (born 1939) experimented early on with industrial materials such as rubber, neon, and lead, and shortly thereafter with steel. His approach to these materials reflects both strength and sensitivity. He creates powerful sculptures, canvases, and works on paper that demonstrate a keen awareness of spatial situations. The volume presents, among other things, a selection of twelve "Prop Pieces" alongside the artist's early films. In both groups of works, the artistic action is at the forefront: the positioning, leaning, and aligning of the lead plates correspond with the simple actions of the filmic works.
