Product details

The photographer Jens Klein was invited to create a photo book for the Protestant Study Foundation. He decided to review the application materials of over 8,000 scholarship recipients who submitted their applications with analog passport photos starting in the 1950s. From the period between 1950 and 2012, Jens Klein selected 176 passport photos of applicants who were supported by the foundation: a kind of cross-section through time and a historical document that reflects the history of the Federal Republic as well as that of photography. The applicants' passport photos illustrate how self-presentation and the medium of photography have changed over the years: from black-and-white to color, from analog to digital media, and from elaborate studio portraits to quick photo booth pictures. In 2012, the foundation introduced an online application process.
