The touching story of a difficult father-daughter relationship. When he is admitted to the hospital due to a fainting spell, Theo senses that he has reached the end of his life: he is old and now in need of care, which makes him feel a helplessness and powerlessness he has never known before. He takes stock of his life, often thinking of his early deceased first wife, whose death he is only now beginning to fully understand, and he recalls irreparable missed opportunities, while his present and his previously happy marriage with Berta become unbalanced. Yet this last year of life also brings happiness and a new beginning through the young Ukrainian caregiver Ludmila, who touches his heart in a way that neither Berta nor his daughter Frieda, with whom he has been estranged for decades, can. Ludmila becomes Theo's last love, providing him with comfort.
