The artist as eye-opener and seer?
German, 2018Product details
Currently, the topics of migration and transculturality are highly relevant, as are the discourses surrounding Global Art History and Multiple Modernities. Within this broader context, the study conducted with students from the University of Saarland focuses on the thematically rich and relational paintings and engravings of the artist Yongbo Zhao (1964), who hails from Manchuria. This anthology makes an important contribution to the understanding of this contemporary Chinese artist, whose work has so far been explored only superficially and without a systematic examination of the thematic complexes present in his oeuvre. In their contributions, the authors address the titular 'border crossing' between European and Chinese image cultures, the resulting hybrid visual language, the strategies of these transcultural political satires, and the artist's self-conception.
