The Beautiful Days of My Youth is a unique document: the diary of a fourteen-year-old Jewish girl from Transylvania, which she secretly kept in Auschwitz and other concentration camps. It is not a retrospective account, not a factual novel, nor a dramatized trial: it is an authentic testimony that even horror has its everyday life. It is a macabre distorted world in which the young girl laughs and cries, starves and eats, is beaten and must understand what it means to die or survive. Strangely, twisted, yet understandable and disturbing, how much the possession of the notebook and the pencil stub, and ultimately the act of writing itself, become the essence of her existence and the subject of the diary. I write, therefore I am. In ghostly episodes, people appear only to disappear without a trace. Only one person is concerned.
