Although it seems undisputed that the development of politically relevant orientations begins in early childhood, children have hardly been the focus of political socialization research since the late 1960s. This study aims to help close this research gap. Based on the assumption that value orientations play a central role in the formation of the political belief system, a contemporary explanatory model of politically relevant socialization in childhood is developed and empirically tested.
