Product details

Greenland at the beginning of the 20th century: A colonial land shaped by power asymmetries. Concurrent with the first educational trips of young Greenlanders to Denmark, a distinct literary tradition can emerge in the Danish colony, which remained isolated until after World War II. Ebbe Volquardsen traces the representatives of an early Greenlandic educational elite to which the authors belong. He asks: How can literary writing and publishing succeed in this constellation? What power mechanisms must Greenlanders navigate to establish themselves as actors in the literary discourse? The author analyzes the first four novels published by Greenlandic authors between 1914 and 1938 and places them in a cultural-historical context. What significance do these novels hold in the discourse on nation-building and identity formation?.
