Product details

Among the lost and forgotten poets of Switzerland, William Wolfensberger (1889-1918) is perhaps the most overlooked. The poet-pastor, who died young from the Spanish flu, produced a series of stories and poems during his short and intense life that are unparalleled in Swiss literature around the time of the First World War. The titles of his publications, which he himself published, such as "Unsers Herrgotts Rebberg" (1916), "Religiöse Miniaturen" (1917), and "Lieder aus einer kleinen Stadt" (1918), may initially seem to promise religious edification literature, but Wolfensberger's literary texts have nothing to do with pious stories. He is a driven seeker of God and a persistent doubter. Raised in Zurich and trained as a pastor there, he was sent to Fuldera in the Bündner Münstertal in 1916, where the city dweller encounters a rural culture in all its facets as a spiritual caregiver. Far removed from the later glorification of the peasantry during the times of spiritual national defense, Wolfensberger depicts the intrigues and cabals, longings and struggles of the common people. As a keen and precise observer, the author engages in literary village sociology with extraordinary psychological finesse. This is strikingly evident in his most extensive and perhaps most important text, "Die Glocken von Pralöng," written in 1918 and published posthumously in the collection "Köpfe und Herzen" (1919).
