Product details

Since the 1970s, Cindy Sherman (born 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey) has been making waves in the art scene with her photographic self-stagings. Her rise to international acclaim, which began with the famous Untitled Film Stills (1977–1980), has been supported by Schirmer/Mosel from the very beginning: in 1982, the first of eight publications on her work was released. To this day, neither the themes she addresses nor her artistic approach—as a director, photographer, and performer of her motifs—have lost their relevance. On the contrary, her multifaceted engagement with questions of identity and societal clichés resonates even more in times of increasingly public gender and transgender debates. The Kunstforum Wien is exploring for the first time under the title "The Cindy Sherman Effect" the influence that Sherman's work, prominently represented in the exhibition with examples from all her series, has had and continues to have on the works of younger artists—including Sophie Calle, Pipilotti Rist, Sarah Lucas, Gillian Wearing, Candice Breitz, Zanele Muholi, Markus Schinwald, Douglas Gordon, Samuel Fosso, and many others.
