Abstract: In this paper, I aim to clarify whether the German language is deteriorating due to youth language. To do this, I have examined the history and evolution of youth language and looked closely at the influences on our current language. To engage with the topic of youth language, I will first present the state of research on youth language. I will begin with some definitions of youth and youth language. Subsequently, I will introduce the characteristics of youth language that have been present across all youth languages over the past decades. In doing so, I will refer to the characteristics of youth language as outlined by Hermann Ehmann.
