Product details

What does psychoanalysis contribute to philosophy? Is there a privilege of philosophy to define the foundations of psychoanalysis? Slavoj Žižek paradigmatically examines the concept of the subject in psychoanalysis in relation to philosophical theories of subjectivity. He demonstrates how Jacques Lacan adopts Descartes' notion of an autonomous, decontextualized subject, but transforms this subject into a doubting, stumbling, fantasizing creator of its illusory world. Accordingly, Lacan interprets the unconscious as a psychic machine that disregards all requirements of the reality principle. In his study on the discomfort in the subject, Žižek thus seeks to investigate philosophical concepts that, in opposition to Descartes, integrally incorporate the lifeworld into the conception of the subject through Lacan's model.
