Product details

From 1970 to 1977, the artist Herbert Distel (*1942) transformed an old sewing thread spool box into a museum. He invited each of his artist colleagues to contribute a miniature artwork for one of the drawers. Influential predecessors of the art scene at that time, such as Marcel Duchamp, Meret Oppenheim, Hannah Höch, Pablo Picasso, and Joseph Beuys, also agreed to participate, resulting in a collection of 500 works by 508 artists (some were collaborative efforts) housed in the 186 cm tall box; most were created specifically for the legendary miniature museum. The drawer museum gained international acclaim: after its first presentation in 1972 at Documenta 5, it was shown in New York, traveled through numerous museums around the world, and eventually found its home at the Kunsthaus Zürich. Today, it is being exhibited again, freshly restored. This book accompanies the fascinating project.
