The Embarrassment of Riches

Schama explores the mysterious contradictions of the Dutch nation, which has reinvented itself from the ground up, achieved an unprecedented level of prosperity, and lived in constant fear of being corrupted by its own good fortune. Using a variety of contemporary documents and lavishly reproduced art, Schama meticulously reconstructs the state of mind of a nation. He recounts bloody uprisings and stranded whales, the cult of hygiene and the plague of tobacco, frugal housewives and extravagant tulip speculators. He tells how the Dutch celebrated themselves and how they were slandered by their enemies.

“History on a grand scale… An ambitious portrait of one of the most remarkable episodes in modern history.” – New York Times

“Wonderfully comprehensive; with wit and intense curiosity, he extracts meaning from every aspect of Dutch life in the 17th century.” – Robert Hughes
