The Treuhandanstalt was an overwhelmed authority that was assigned a multitude of tasks by the political sphere. From the very beginning, public expectations were high, and the work of the Treuhandanstalt was controversial. Its scope of action was constrained by the enormous economic and political dynamics and the rapidly emerging consequences of privatization. Employee protests, deindustrialization, European subsidies, alternatives to privatization, networks, and economic crime are topics that are exemplarily illuminated in this anthology. All authors have collaborated on the project concerning the history of the Treuhandanstalt at the Institute for Contemporary History Munich-Berlin and present here important findings from the latest research.
