Product details
An explosive piece about the only saint from Carinthia, exploring faith and femininity, set in the High Middle Ages yet very contemporary. It is not a typical saint's life, but rather a modern examination of the meaning of life and God. Franzobel has rarely been so existential as he is here. Hemma, a wealthy noblewoman, marries Count Wilhelm, who owns rich estates in Carniola. The couple belongs to the high nobility and lives off silver mines. Wilhelm lives indulgently, extravagantly, and autonomously, adhering to no other order than his addiction to life. As they are unable to have children, Hemma promises to change her life if she becomes a mother. She gives birth to two sons. A rebellion of the miners ensues. The noble sons brutally punish the leaders, prompting the workers to set a trap for them. The noble sons are captured and vow to improve their ways.
