Croatia and Slavonia, crown lands of the Habsburg monarchy, have previously been regarded as a region with little pronounced antisemitism. However, Marija Vulesica demonstrates that antisemitism had also found its way into Croatian political culture. In particular, the opposition parties, which opposed German and Hungarian dominance in Croatia-Slavonia, identified Jews as their accomplices. Antisemitism was not only a symptom of national conflicts but also of social ones. By primarily analyzing opposition newspapers, the author highlights the influence of transnational antisemitic movements within the Habsburg monarchy.
