The Frankfurt Painter's Quarter has developed into a sophisticated, enclosed residential area around 1900 within the ring between the former city wall and the Landwehr along the southern side of the Main River. The pleasant location by the river, outside the narrow buildings dating back to the Middle Ages in the former bridgehead of Sachsenhausen, had already allowed for the establishment of early summer houses around the mid-18th century. With the simultaneous construction of the Untermain Bridge and the Städel Museum, 1874 marked the beginning of direct access to Frankfurt's center as well as an urbanistic start, which was followed by the planning and construction of the quarter, eventually comprising nearly 800 buildings with its partly noble villas and apartment houses over the next 65 years. The fact that in 2015 the Johann Friedrich Städel Foundation celebrated its 200th anniversary with the Pinakothek and Academy justifies this historical significance.
