The powerful right-wing network of the German Club, which existed in Vienna from 1908 to 1939, influenced political developments in Austria in many ways during the interwar period. Above all, the elitist club was significantly involved in the National Socialist infiltration of the country in the 1930s. After the Anschluss in March 1938, several of these Austro-Nazis assumed key positions in politics, business, culture and science. Based on new archival material, the study reveals the true significance of the Verein as well as the Deutsche Gemeinschaft, a secret society closely linked to the Deutscher Klub. It also shows how fluid the transitions between national and National Socialist were for the elite of the "third camp" in the 1930s - and how much the networks formed in the First Republic continued to have an impact in the Second Republic.
