Nothing is more inviting to reveal one's secrets than hearing others share their own.

London, June 1965. Karl Braun arrives in Pimlico as a lodger: without a hat, wearing a bow tie, with gray hair and a slender build. His new neighbors are fascinated by this cultured German gentleman who works as a piano tuner; many are fellow émigrés who assume that he, like them, fled to England to escape Hitler. That summer, Braun courts a woman, attends classical concerts, buys bacon, and dances the twist. Yet, as newspapers fill with reports of the hunt for Nazi war criminals, his nightmares become increasingly worse.
