This Gospel of Luke is characterised by an unusual, appealing design. Unlike other illustrated Bibles, the pictures do not scenically reproduce the content of the text, but rather offer an invitation to read. Many of the illustrations only reveal their full meaning in combination with the text, so that a preoccupation with the works of art almost inevitably leads to a preoccupation with the accompanying text. The design is reminiscent of a handwritten letter in order to address the reader in a very personal way. In discovering the connections between drawings, patterns and the text, viewers should enjoy engaging with the Word of God and enjoy the extraordinary way of encountering the biblical text.
