Product details

"Systems" provides an overview of Jeanne van Heeswijk's artistic practice over the past ten years in three chapters. The book presents both models for the design of social spaces and guidelines for analyzing societal structures. The first chapter is dedicated to play. Games are exercises in social interaction; they simulate reality and are open to experimentation; their rules define the boundaries within which a free space allows for action. The second chapter examines urban structures of communal living through living spaces. Here, the external reference points of social conditioning can be found. The third chapter focuses on the free spaces created by humans as sites of individual artistic engagement. Many of van Heeswijk's works fall into these areas or form structures that provide a perspective on the social situation. The depicted social spaces and strategies are documented through rules and drawings, texts, and photographs. However, it also allows for variations, as anecdotal statements, advice, and contributions from participants complement the picture in a collage-like manner, offering insights into a wide range of experiential spaces. With texts by Carlos Basualdo, Marjolein Schaap, and Axel Lapp. Jeanne van Heeswijk (*1965) lives and works in Rotterdam. German/English.
