Product details

Based on previously overlooked insights, Thomas Schroedter introduces new impulses in the current discussion surrounding prostitution and the associated discourses on sexuality, migration, and patriarchy. At the same time, he engages with the ongoing debate regarding the German prostitution law, which can hardly be considered resolved. In light of the contradictions in previous empirical studies and the high emotionality with which the controversy over prostitution is conducted, Thomas Schroedter compiles arguments that are scarcely or not at all acknowledged in the current discourse. Among other things, he highlights how xenophobia and boundary transgression play a significant role in the discourse. He also points out that they provide a particular aspect within societal disciplinary management. Thus, societies grounded in patriarchy, exchange, and urban life achieve a certain stability despite their crises, to which prostitution—whether legal or illegal—ultimately contributes. In this context, prostitutes are viewed as part of those who represent the feminine other. Since historical considerations are absent in the current debate, the author begins his discussion with a detailed historical summary.
