The importance of social work for people with dementia: Being a person despite dementia
German, 2013Product details
If I am no longer a person, why do I feel and suffer like any other person? Many people with dementia may ask themselves this question. They want to be recognized as full citizens of society, with their human rights, and as creative beings. But what remains when we lose our conscious memory? The unconscious memory remains. The longing for closeness and security remains. A lifelong development of personality remains. People with dementia should be perceived in their entirety, supported, nurtured, and not degraded to prisoners of their own bodies. We can guide them, draw their attention to the world, and integrate them into the community. Through professional empathetic observation, it is possible to give a voice to those who cannot express their needs.
