Society is changing: For organizations, it is becoming increasingly difficult to adhere to long-term planning in the face of unstable environmental conditions. Instead, there is a growing need for new and flexible forms of planning that can innovatively interact with existing structures. Improvisation presents itself as such a form - as a learnable skill as well as a technique for constructively dealing with disorder. Christopher Dell demonstrates how improvisation can become a technology: through a theory that interprets organizations neither as substances nor as containers, but as performative entities, and that is capable of conceptualizing and orienting improvisational action as a technique.
