Product details
The psychoanalyst and philosopher Cynthia Fleury demonstrates in her provocative essay how irreplaceability is at the core not only of subjectivation and individuation but also of the consolidation of the rule of law and democracy. We are irreplaceable. The rule of law is nothing without the irreplaceability of individuals. In philosophical criticism, the individual is often portrayed as the reason for the atomization of society and as a counterpoint to the values and principles of the rule of law. However, democracy needs free subjects, the engagement of individuals, and their determination to ensure its lasting existence. It is not normalization that will protect democracy, but rather the individuals who advocate for democracy will do so. This requires individuation, not individualism. The concern for the rule of law is a form of care.
