Jane Austen was born in 1775 in rural Hampshire, the daughter of a wealthy village parson who supported her artistic endeavors. In novels such as Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, and Emma, she developed her subtle analysis of contemporary life through portrayals of the middle class in small towns. Her sharp wit and concise portraits of ordinary people have given her novels lasting popularity. She passed away in 1817.
