The Lanzo Valleys (Val Grande, Val d'Ala, and Valle di Viù) in the southern Graian Alps are a high alpine region located northwest of Turin. Here, an impressive and rugged natural landscape prevails in the summit area: glaciated peaks around 3,500 meters high, mountain lakes, moraines, scree fields, and rock walls made of hard stone. Below, vast and water-rich alpine areas spread out. Despite their proximity to the metropolis of Turin, the Lanzo Valleys currently lead a shadowy existence in terms of tourism. In the past, however, these valleys were a popular summer retreat for the Turin upper class. Numerous Belle Époque buildings (hotels, villas, train stations) still testify to this "golden" era. For hikers, this alpine region is very attractive: easily accessible by train, yet far from mass tourism; a wild natural landscape with diverse flora and fauna.
