Product details

The sculptor and painter Hugo Weber (1918-1971) was the only Swiss artist to participate in the American abstract expressionism of the late 1940s to early 1960s. After his education in Basel and Paris, where he met Alberto Giacometti among others, he studied art history, philology, and philosophy at the University of Basel. In 1946, he was appointed by László Moholy-Nagy to the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, a turning point that allowed him to achieve breakthrough success as an artist in the USA in the early 1950s. This was followed by an active teaching career, and his works were regularly exhibited in major galleries, such as at Betty Parsons in New York. This book explores not only Weber's biography but also his engagement with Alberto Giacometti, documenting the relationship between the two artists with numerous photographs.
