Volume 4 of the Robert Musil Complete Works presents the second version of the novel's continuation from the estate, which Musil worked on from 1936 to 1942, until the moment on April 15, 1942, when death took the pen from his hand while he was revising the chapter "Breaths of a Summer Day." "[...] what this final volume looks like," the author writes to a patron in his very last letter: It will derive "from a multitude of ideas that dominate us because we do not master any of them, the story of an unusual passion, whose ultimate collapse coincides with that of culture, which modestly began in 1914." The Man Without Qualities remains a torso. For the editor, this presents the task of editing the unfinished works from the estate. And he succeeds, like no one before him, in guiding the reader through the thicket of drafts.
