Product details

If Jean Lafond, the master of French stained glass research, had known about the approximately 800 stained glass windows in Freiburg, as presented in this new study, he would certainly have counted Freiburg among the 'holy cities' of stained glass. It has preserved an astonishing wealth of high-ranking works from more than three centuries. The Jesse windows from the late Romanesque choir of Freiburg Cathedral are a major work of the antiquarian style created around 1200, likely in Cologne. The west window from the Dominican church is a highlight of Strasbourg art around 1300. Between 1250 and 1350, two stained glass workshops based in Freiburg created numerous windows for the cathedral, contributing a distinctive blend of cathedral ambition and civic self-understanding to high Gothic art. The Ropstein workshop, active in Freiburg from 1510 to 1540, produced outstanding early Renaissance works for the cathedral choir and the Carthusian monastery, based on designs by Hans Baldung Grien. The ability to convey the complex interrelationships in a vivid manner is a groundbreaking achievement in German stained glass research. This volume complements the study on stained glass in Baden and the Palatinate, published by the same author in 1979, which had excluded the extensive Freiburg collections.
