The last scion of an old Indian spice trading dynasty, Moraes Zogoiby, known as Moor, tells the absurd story of his family. It begins with Moor's great-grandfather Francisco da Gama, whose death in the stormy waves of the South Indian Sea sparked a disastrous family feud and later unleashed a gigantic clan war. We also hear about the Moorish Sultan Boabdil, who was expelled from Spain in 1492 and lamented the end of Arab rule in Spain with a final sigh over the rooftops of Granada. According to family legend, this very Moor could have been the ancestor of the Zogoibys. Rushdie takes the reader into a wonderfully exotic and colorful world while simultaneously writing a chronicle of modern India.
