Product details

Josefine Mutzenbacher. The Story of a Viennese Whore. Told by herself, it is arguably the most famous yet notorious text of Austrian turn-of-the-century literature. Published in 1906, the text serves as a crystallization point for nearly all discourses on sexuality in the 20th and 21st centuries: a forbidden book and simultaneously one of the great erotic bestsellers in German (or rather: Viennese) language, which "enlightened" generations of Central European men under their desks. The Fini was ostracized, adapted into films, and yet also defended - and is repeatedly appreciated for its obscene-humorous linguistic style, as noted by Oswald Wiener, one of the figures of the Viennese Group. Written by an anonymous author (often suspected to be Felix Salten, the author of the children's book Bambi), the question of what is moral has always been raised with Mutzenbacher.
