S.E. Hinton wrote "The Outsiders," her first book, when she was 17 years old; it was a phenomenal success. The publication allowed her to attend the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma, where she graduated in 1970 with a major in education. S.E. Hinton was the first recipient of the American Library Association Award for outstanding contributions to young adult literature. She continues to live in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Teenagers in a small town in Oklahoma have split into two gangs, divided by money, tastes, and attitudes. The Socs' idea of fun is to beat up Greasers like Ponyboy Curtis. Ponyboy knows what to expect and knows he can count on his brother.
