Georg Osterwald was born in 1803 in Rinteln and studied in Bonn and Munich. In 1841, after a temporary stay in Paris, he moved to Cologne. There, the resumed construction of the cathedral and the intellectual and cultural climate promised lucrative commissions. In the Rhine metropolis, he found the center of his work until his death and became one of the most important visual chroniclers of the city and the Rhineland in the second half of the 19th century. During this time, Osterwald also undertook the inevitable educational journey to Italy for a German Romantic. Active well into old age and committed to Romantic painting throughout his life, Georg Osterwald died on July 1, 1884, in Cologne. This volume presents the first comprehensive monographic study of Osterwald's work.
