Product details

The everyday relevance of historical and contemporary borders in Ukraine. Since 2014, Ukraine has been omnipresent in the media. Alongside linguistic, religious, or political differences, it is often the historical borders that are held responsible for regional disparities. Sabine von Löwis examines, in a case study at the historical border along the Zbruc River, the significance of past state orders for everyday life in present-day Ukraine. The village communities studied for this purpose were originally founded as a single village and were only divided by the partitions of Poland at the end of the 18th century. After 1945, they belonged undivided, but also not united, to the Soviet Union; today, they are part of independent Ukraine. Through the lens of a village anniversary, the author analyzes economic, political, and cultural peculiarities.
