Adolf Endler was undoubtedly one of the most significant authors of both Germanys, a singular figure in his own right. He published his first poem at the age of seventeen, two years after the end of the war, still in the Rhineland, where he was born to a Belgian mother and a Bohemian father and lived until 1955. Full of youthful energy (and as he soon realized: full of illusions), he then moved to East Germany, studied at the Leipzig Literary Institute, and soon began writing and publishing poems, essays, and prose books, which he himself called phantasmagorical. Since his expulsion from the Writers' Association in 1979, he has been one of the most important guiding figures for other authors. Terms like 'Saxon School of Poets' or 'Prenzlauer Berg Connection' are his inventions.
