It seems like every ten years a new edition of Cervantes creates a stir. The number of times Shakespeare's sonnets have been translated anew is hard to quantify: This automatically raises the question of purpose. Are "old" translations truly outdated and poor, and are "new" ones automatically better - or do new translations often serve merely to slap a new label on a literary work, benefiting marketing more than addressing substantive needs?
