When scholars of religion or sociologists engage with Buddhist practice, it often happens that a wide range of topics is discovered and explored—such as power dynamics and gender relations—while the core focus of practitioners in their practice is overlooked. Typically, the fact that Buddhist teachings—like other spiritual traditions—are soteriological systems falls out of view. The Greek term Soteria means salvation, redemption, and healing. But what does this healing consist of, and how does it relate to a practice that claims to regard all sensory phenomena as essentially empty? Is there merely one practice here, or, depending on the Buddhist training path, several different, divergent practices that may also be associated with various soteriological goals? These questions are worth exploring.
