Henri Thomas, born in 1912 in the Vosges, died in 1993 in Paris, a student of Alain, and friends with André Gide and Jean Paulhan, published the autobiographically grounded novel Le Promontoire in 1961, shortly after meeting Paul Celan. Celan translated a large part very quickly; then the continuation of the work failed due to contract negotiations with the Hanser Verlag, which published the work in 1963 in a translation by Elmar Tophoven.
