The camera is Marianne Müller's instrument for long-term observation of self and world. At home and while traveling, day and night, she collects fragments of reality and adds them to her ever-growing photographic archive. This was her starting point for "The Proper Ornaments," an artist's book that also serves as a showcase of her work over the past twelve years. The book boldly combines intimate body images and observations of the ubiquitous beauty of the seemingly trivial to create a picture of a Dionysian counter-world beyond purpose and norm. For the first time, Müller also presents her concise pencil drawings, whose elegant simplicity re-engages and complements the photographer's gaze.
