Product details

"The Prussian fortifications of Koblenz (1815-1834)" is a comprehensive study of the significant fortifications built after the Prussians took control of the Rhine. This dissertation, produced at the University of Mainz, sheds light on the development and construction of the fortifications in Koblenz, which span an area of approximately 20 square kilometers. The Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Middle Rhine Valley, is one of the preserved structures of this impressive complex. The work is based on extensive archival materials, some of which have only been accessible since 1992, and provides a detailed insight into the planning and execution of construction projects led by prominent Prussian military officers and engineers. The dissertation documents not only the construction measures but also the social and economic impacts associated with the expropriation of land and the employment of over 6,000 workers. The findings of this research contribute to the reconstruction of the overall complex and highlight the historical significance of the fortifications in Koblenz.

  • Comprehensive analysis of the fortifications of Koblenz between 1815 and 1834
  • Based on newly accessible archival material
  • Detailed representation of planning and execution by Prussian engineers
  • Insight into the social and economic impacts of the construction projects.
