This book presents a comprehensive account of queens in the early Middle Ages for the first time. The first part of the book addresses the political history of the individual kingdoms during the Migration Period up to the end of the Carolingian Empire, with a particular focus on queens and their political influence. Significant queens such as the Ostrogoth Amalaswintha, the Visigoth Goiswinth, the Lombards Theudelinde and Ansa, as well as the Merovingians Radegunde, Brunichild, and Balthild, and not least the Carolingians Bertrada, Judith, Angilberga, and Richgard are given a clearer profile. The second part examines selected aspects in a comparative perspective, such as the origins of the queens, foreign marriages and divorces, their dowries and court, as well as regencies, political interventions, death, and burial.
