The book is dedicated to the biographical legends about Hasidic saints, the Zaddikim. It describes the life journey of the Zaddikim from birth to death through the eyes of mostly imaginative narrators and compares these portrayals with other Jewish legends. Piece by piece, the history of Jewish hagiography is reconstructed, culminating in the vibrant storytelling of the Hasidic narrators. At the same time, the book examines the Jewish legend to identify the profiles of holy men, particularly in Eastern European Hasidism, and how these reflect the ideals of this last branch of Jewish mysticism. A subsequent comparison between Christian and Jewish legends aims to sharpen the understanding of the uniqueness of Jewish hagiography.
