The wooden-earth fortification on the "Breitung" field in Weissenburg i.Bay. has been almost completely excavated and is unparalleled in Roman military architecture in terms of its interior construction with post buildings. This volume presents the results of the archaeological excavations that took place between 1976 and 1991. The three-hectare fort was built on the site of an abandoned settlement from the Late La Tène period and next to a Celtic rectangular earthwork. It is believed that the Roman military used it only for a short time, likely during a temporary assignment around 160 AD, alongside the well-known Roman garrison in Weissenburg i.Bay.-Biriciana. A strong, partially mounted unit, a cohors equitata milliaria, is likely to have been stationed there as part of the expansion of the Limes.
