Fernando Pessoa (1888-1935), arguably the most significant modern poet of Portugal, is also known to us through "The Book of Disquiet." He is one of the great literary innovators, not only the founder of modern poetry in his country but also a key figure in the development of contemporary poetry as a whole. He created not only poems and poetic prose texts of various, even contradictory kinds, but also embodiments of the objects of his thought and poetry: his heteronyms. He gave his multifaceted split self the names Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis, Álvaro de Campos, and Pessoa, which in Portuguese means 'Person, Mask, Fiction, Nobody.'.
