Product details

The Bruderklausenspiel, performed over two days in 1601 in Sarnen by the local pastor Johann Zurflüe, addresses the life and work of Saint Nicholas of Flüe. In addition to the first edition of the oldest German-language Bruderklausenspiel, the book offers commentary on the historical and political context of the performance and the contemporary tradition of saint plays, supplemented by insights into further dramatizations of the material and the reception of the Bruderklausenspiel tradition in the 20th century. The play was most likely performed in September 1601 in the village square of Sarnen. It depicts the life of the hermit from Obwalden, covering all significant episodes: his marriage to Dorothee Wyss, the decision to become a hermit, the journey to Burgundy, as well as his settlement in Flüeli-Ranft and life there. Through a colorful sequence of scenes, it portrays the life of the population in the Early Modern period, the actions of Nicholas of Flüe, and - in comical devil scenes - the prevailing fears of damnation at that time. The impact of Nicholas of Flüe's words on the populace is vividly illustrated in everyday life, as well as in the personified cantons that appear in the political life of the era. The Sarner Bruderklausenspiel, preserved in a single manuscript, provides fascinating insights into the theater practices of the time.
