More than 100 years ago, Friedrich Nietzsche proclaimed the death of God. However, this demise is still awaited. In the marketplace of interpretations, religions are even experiencing a resurgence. Volker Gerhardt offers a seemingly paradoxical philosophical explanation for this: the ever-increasing knowledge requires supplementation by faith. Apart from the fact that we already rely on knowledge when it is supposed to guide us, the always limited knowledge demands a perspective of meaning that can only be desired, hoped for, or believed. As a comprehensive unity of this constantly needed self- and world-confidence, the divine is identified, which underlies each individual sense of action. This view of rational theology can be developed from the living conditions of modernity.
