K. Sello Duiker (born Kabelo Duiker) was born in 1974 in Soweto, South Africa. His debut novel "Thirteen Cents" won the Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best First Book - Africa in 2001. His second novel "The Quiet Violence of Dreams" was published in 2002 and received enthusiastic acclaim from the international press. Duiker was awarded the Herman Charles Bosman Prize for this work. In 2003, he received a literary fellowship from the kunst:raum sylt quelle foundation. In January 2005, K. Sello Duiker took his own life. In his novel, K. Sello Duiker paints a contemporary picture of South African urban culture. The story is set in Cape Town, the second-largest city in South Africa. Tshepo, a student, is admitted to a psychiatric facility following a drug-induced psychosis. After his escape and subsequent return, he begins a treatment that leads to his recovery.
